Relocating to Europe from Dubai? Here’s How Your Car Gets There Too

Your flights are booked, the villa lease is ending and the furniture quotes are in. Then someone asks about the car. For many families relocating to Europe from Dubai, that question gets pushed to the final fortnight, which is exactly when it turns expensive.

Shipping a car out of the UAE is a well-trodden route. It simply runs on paperwork and timing, and both start earlier than most people expect.

Keep the Keys or Hand Them Over?

First, is the car worth moving? A model that’s hard to find in Europe, or one you know and trust, often makes the case for itself.

Ownership time matters just as much. When relocating to Europe from Dubai, the tax relief that keeps shipping affordable depends on how long you’ve owned and used the car abroad. A car bought last month rarely qualifies. Check, too, whether a GCC-spec model needs changes to register at your destination.

The Paperwork That Leaves Before Your Car Does

Export starts at the RTA, not the port. You’ll need to clear any traffic fines, buy export insurance and have the car deregistered. The RTA then issues an export certificate and temporary export plates, and the car has to leave within the short window those plates allow.

Financed cars add a step. Your bank must settle or release the loan before deregistration can go ahead. Your shipping agent then handles Dubai Customs clearance and the bill of lading.

RoRo or Container: Choosing Your Sea Route

Most cars travel by sea, whether you’re booking sea cargo to the UK from Dubai or heading for Rotterdam. With roll-on/roll-off (RoRo), the car is driven onto a specialist vessel and secured on deck. It’s the cheaper choice.

Container shipping costs more, but the car travels sealed inside its own box. For classic or high-value cars, that protection is worth paying for. You can also pack furniture around the car, so everything arrives together.

What Waits for Your Car at the Other End

In the UK, you can apply for Transfer of Residence relief through HMRC’s ToR1 form. If you’ve lived outside the UK for at least 12 months and owned and used the car for at least six, you won’t pay import duty or VAT on it. Apply before the car ships, and don’t sell, lend or hire it out for 12 months after import. The car then needs a NOVA notification before DVLA registration.

Heading to the EU instead? A reliable cargo service to Europe from Dubai should check your destination’s rules before the car is loaded. Most EU countries offer similar relief for people moving their normal residence, but registration, inspections and local taxes differ from one country to the next.

Some Things Can’t Wait Six Weeks

Sea freight takes weeks. Your laptop, school uniforms and winter coats can’t sit on a ship that long. Send a few essential boxes ahead, and you’re settled while the car is still at sea. Air cargo to the UK from Dubai is charged by weight, so keep it to genuine essentials.

Relocating to Europe from Dubai Without the Last-Minute Rush

Start the export paperwork early, secure your tax relief before shipping, and match the sea method to the car’s value.

My Dubai Cargo plans air and sea shipments from Dubai and Abu Dhabi to the UK and across Europe, so your boxes, furniture and car can travel on one joined-up schedule. If you’re relocating to Europe from Dubai, tell us your destination and moving date, and we’ll map out the route with you.

    FAQs

    1. Do I need an export certificate to ship my car from Dubai?

Yes. The RTA deregisters the car and issues an export certificate along with temporary export plates. You’ll also need export insurance, and any traffic fines must be cleared first. Without the certificate, Dubai Customs won’t clear the car for shipping.

    2. Can I ship a car that is still under finance?

Only with your lender’s agreement. Most UAE banks require the loan to be settled, or a formal release issued, before the RTA will deregister the car. Speak to your bank early, since this approval step frequently causes the longest delays.

    3. Is RoRo or container shipping better for my car?

RoRo is the cheaper option and suits everyday cars. Container shipping costs more but keeps the car sealed and secured, which suits classic or high-value vehicles. It also lets you ship household goods alongside the car in the same container.

    4. Will I pay import duty on my car in the UK?

Not if HMRC approves your Transfer of Residence relief through the ToR1 form. You must have lived outside the UK for 12 months and owned and used the car for six. Without that approval, both import duty and VAT apply.

    5. How long does it take to ship a car from Dubai to Europe?

Sea freight usually takes several weeks, depending on the destination port, sailing schedules and customs checks. Paperwork in Dubai adds time before departure, so start the export process well before your moving date to avoid paying extra port storage costs.
